Chelsea set an unwanted record at they lost their first BPL match to Burnley

Antonio Conte tempted fate somewhat when he talked about his side not having a "Mourinho season" just a few weeks ago, as the Blues could not have got off to a worse start.

It seems they like to have a year off after winning the Premier League. They got their title defence underway with a 3-2 home defeat to Burnley, shipping three goals and seeing Gary Cahill sent off all before half-time.

This was Cahill's first official game as club captain and it ended after just fourteen minutes. The England international went lunging in on Steven Defour, timed the challenge poorly, and was given his marching orders.

From there, the afternoon was a disaster. A Sam Vokes brace sandwiched a strike from Stephen Ward, leading the hosts to be soundly booed off the pitch at the interval.

Conte further irked fans by bringing off Michy Batshuayi for Alvaro Morata rather than keeping both strikers on.

The Spanish international at least managed to salvage some pride with his first competitive goal for the club, and his later attempt was ruled out for offside. David Luiz then got another one back with two minutes to go.
