Anfield showdown between Liverpool and Chelsea dampens Premier League title dreams as Mohammed Salah shine bright against his old club (Details, pics)

Chelsea and Liverpool shared the spoils at Anfield. A result that favours neither side, while it will please their competitors in the top six, and a somewhat fair reflection on the balance of play.

Jurgen Klopp and Antonio Conte had differing game plans going into the fixture. The hosts knocked the ball around and attempted to control possession in order to wear down Chelsea, who dealt comfortably with their efforts and looked increasingly threatening on the break. In the end, it all boiled down to a duel between Mohamed Salah and Eden Hazard.

The atmosphere inside the stadium was up to task with the home supporters rising to the occasion and getting behind their team. However, in the opening stages it may have had a more negative effect as it translated to nerves on the pitch with several misplaced passes going astray.

Controlling the tempo in the opening stages allowed the Reds to camp Chelsea inside their own half, but they did not have enough of an impact in the final third to trouble Courtois. Once their initial dominance wore off, the Blues came to life with Hazard in a starring role, bewitching Liverpool. The Belgian was involved in every one of his team's surges forward, the player his teammates instantly looked for after winning the ball back.

Chelsea's back line remained firm and Liverpool struggled to fashion a couple of half-chances before Hazard, rather unsurprisingly, was the first to test the keeper. The playmaker did it all himself, bringing down a long ball and cutting inside from the left flank to force Mignolet into action at the near post.

And once the Blues had their first sight on goal, a flurry of chances ensued. Drinkwater and Zappacosta were both denied by Mignolet as Liverpool also survived a goalmouth scramble moments later, while Salah fired just wide of the far corner after turning Cahill on the right side.

The first half came to a close after stunning displays by Hazard and Salah, who were quite rightly showered with praise. They were quickly into their stride after the break as they looked to break the deadlock.

And it was the Egyptian who reaped the rewards to his efforts after the one-hour mark, finding the back of the net at the Kop End before refusing to celebrate the goal against his former side. The visitors were made to pay for missing their chances before the break when a fast-paced move saw Oxlade-Chamberlain's through ball pry Chelsea wide open for the first time all evening and Liverpool took the lead.

The Blues responded immediately and Conte piled bodies forward while the home side took a step back in an attempt to hold on for the final whistle. But Chelsea's pressure eventually paid off. With five minutes to go, Willian's cross for Morata turned into a brilliant shot which looped over Mignolet before nestling in the far corner.

Antonio Conte's winless record against Liverpool continues after an action-packed 90 minutes of football in which ultimately individual moments stood out.
