Billionaire battles £1.1bn divorce suit with woman he had fake marriage with (Details, pics)

A property tycoon who said his estranged wife was not entitled to a share of his fortune because their marriage certificate was fake has settled a High Court dispute, a judge has been told.

Asif Aziz, dubbed 'Mr West End' due his string of properties in central London, revealed he was never legally married to Tagilde Aziz as the couple obtained the 'fake' document so their adopted child could get a passport.

Tagilde disputed the claim made by the wealthy businessman, who was born in Malawi and whose portfolio includes the London Trocadero.

Tagilde, who is in her 50s, maintained they were married, claiming they were together for 20 years and that she was entitled to a 'fair share' of the marital pot she put at £1.1 billion.

Aziz, who is in his 40s, in October told Mr Justice Moor that he wanted the judge to rescind a divorce pronouncement.

She said a Muslim marriage ceremony took place in Malawi in 2002, but Aziz claimed no ceremony took place.

Lawyers for both sides on Monday told Mr Justice Moor, at a public hearing in the Family Division of the High Court in London, that an agreement had been reached.

Aziz, who founded London-based property business Criterion Capital, and Tagilde were in court to hear lawyers announce the agreement.

They gave no detail of the terms of the settlement.
