Ex-England star Steven Gerrard is accused of 'gloating' after buying his daughter a 18-carat rose gold iPad for her sixth birthday (Details, pics)

Former Liverpool star Steven Gerrard has come under fire from fans after posting about an extravagant gift for his daughter on Instagram.

The Father of 4 kids, Gerrard gave his six-year-old daughter Lourdes an 18-carat rose gold iPad for her birthday. The 37-year-old published three photographs of the £1,455 device to his 6.5million followers complete with the caption: 'Thanks @idesigngold for Lourdes 18k rose gold iPad with deep engraving check out there new website www.idesigngold.'

The message on the gadget reads: 'Happy 6th Birthday Lourdes. Lots of love Mum & Dad X'.

But the midfielder, who wowed fans on the terraces during a long and glittering career for Liverpool and England, faced a backlash from his followers.

Instagram user Edwa62I said: '[Ireally like this couple and always thought he was very down to earth! But this is just so ridiculous for a 6 year old. What will she expect to receive next year? And why broadcast it all over Instagram?'

Andy Nicholls agreed with his statements, writing: 'My all time legend and I will continue to support you, but so very disappointed with this post.'

Theonlymod added: 'Talk about gloating man...most of the Liverpudlians are in poverty!'Others also pointed out that if the post was an advert, it should comply with Advertising Standards Agency standards.

However, many people rushed to Gerrard's defence, highlighting his charity work and long career.

Anne McGaughey wrote in response to another critical post: 'You're so wrong. He has a foundation and works very hard with those in Liverpool less fortunate than himself. He can spend his money how he likes on his children who are his world as it should be.'
