Record-breaking Manchester City make it 11wins on the bounce (Details, pics)

Manchester City won their eleventh consecutive Premier League game by coming from behind to beat a determined Huddersfield side, setting a record for the best ever start to a top flight season after 13 matches.

A Nicolas Otamendi own goal gave the home side the lead on the stroke of half-time, but a penalty from Sergio Aguero just after the break and a late Raheem Sterling winner secured all three points for the high-flying Manchester City.

The game started according to the form book, with Huddersfield penned in their own half and City dominating the ball, although they were struggling to get past a well-organised defence. Sergio Aguero had the ball in the back of the net after 13 minutes after converting from a Kevin De Bruyne free-kick, but he was comfortably offside and the linesman rightly flagged.

Pep Guardiola’s side were dominating the ball but Huddersfield were restricting space in midfield, meaning David Silva and De Bruyne were unable to influence the game as they normally would.

A rare foray into the opposition half for Huddersfield saw Tom Smith cut inside and shoot high and wide after 20 minutes.

Towards the end of the half City started to turn up the pressure and Sane squared for De Bruyne inside the box but his poor first touch meant Huddersfield defenders could crowd him out and Jonas Lossl gathered. Moments later, Silva drifted through the midfield superbly before threading through for Aguero, but his first touch let him down and Christopher Schindler got back to make the block.

Although the away side were starting to turn the screw, they were given a warning when Jorgensen poked just wide minutes before the break. Aaron Mooy crossed in from the right and Rajiv Van La Parra flicked the ball on inside the area, but Jorgensen couldn’t react quick enough and he poked wide from 10 yards out.

Raheem Sterling could’ve given City the lead after 38 minutes but he fired wide from close range after Lossl palmed away an effort from Aguero from the left.

City clearly did not heed that warning and on the stroke of half-time the home side had a shock lead. Schindler flicked on Thomas Ince’s corner from the right at the near post and the ball deflected into the goal off the shoulder of Nicolas Otamendi and City found themselves trailing for just the third time this season.

As people pondered whether City’s unbeaten run would come to an end during the break, the away side gave the perfect response at the start of the second half. They started on the front foot straight away and were awarded a penalty one minute in when Sterling was hauled back from Scott Malone inside the area. Aguero stepped up and calmly dispatched the penalty, sending Lossl the wrong way, to level the scores.

Normal service was resumed and City were dominating and Lossl had to get down well to save from Aguero from close range after he was played through by Fernandinho.

After 57 minutes, City almost took the lead in superb fashion, but Sane’s ferocious free-kick from 25 yards out struck the crossbar as Lossl was rooted to the spot.

Whilst Guardiola’s side were enjoying almost all of the ball, Huddersfield’s resolute defence were keeping them at arm’s length and a couple of jiggly fouls meant they were unable to work their passing game.

However, 84 minutes in, City finally found the goal they were searching for courtesy of Raheem Sterling. The winger followed up his pass to Kevin De Bruyne and after Lossl saved from Aguero from point blank range, the ball bounced off Sterling and looped into the goal to give the visitors a late, dramatic lead.

Huddersfield were clearly out on their feet, and were unable to get anything going in the final minutes and City secured their eleventh straight win in the Premier League.

Tensions were high after the game and Rajiv Van La Parra was shown a red card after the final whistle for raising his hands in an altercation with Sane. Nevertheless, it was a big win for the Premier League leaders as they maintained their eight point lead at the top, whilst managing their first Premier League away win after trailing at half-time since 1995.

On top of the record breaking start to the season, Guardiola’s side have now also set a top-flight record of 11 consecutive away wins.

Although it’s still relatively early on in the season, that kind of performance makes it difficult to see how City will be beaten, and they’re flying high at the top of the table.
