Limp Manchester United swept aside by Tottenham Hotspur on Alexis Sanchez PL debut (Details, pics)
An unusually limp performance from Manchester United saw Tottenham ease to a 2-0 victory at Wembley on Wednesday night thanks to an early goal from Christian Eriksen and an own-goal from Phil Jones. Spurs went into the game looking to close the gap on fourth place to just two points and their determination to do so was clear from the outset as they took the lead after just 11 seconds at Wembley.
Immediately from the kick off the ball was launched forwards and when Dele Alli fluffed his attempt at a volley the ball dropped perfectly for Christian Eriksen to guide an effort past David De Gea from eight yards to give the hosts a shock, early lead.
However, despite the early setback United reacted well, with the returning Hugo Lloris having to be alert to deny Jesse Lingard after he was put in by Paul Pogba.
Harry Kane, stranded a goal shy of a Premier League century, saw a tame effort kept out by De Gea after being fed by Eriksen, before Spurs doubled their lead just before the half-hour mark.
Eriksen found the marauding Kieran Trippier down the right and he crossed low, with the hapless Phil Jones contriving to put through his own net at the near post after being unable to sort his feet out.
Once again United reacted well, with Anthony Martial seeing a fierce effort from a narrow angle kept out by Lloris, before Pogba could only prod over a decent chance at the far post under pressure from Dele Alli following a corner.
Eric Dier headed over Eriksen’s free-kick from the right as half-time approached, whilst Kane arguably should have done better after being found by the Dane in the dying embers of the first half. With that, Spurs went in two goals to the good at the break and they started the second half the better side.
Son Heung-Min dragged a low effort wide from the edge of the box after Ashley Young carelessly conceded possession in midfield, before Lukaku saw a powerful effort kept out by Lloris following a good ball from Pogba.
Jose Mourinho turned to his bench at that point in order to look for a route back into the game with Juan Mata and Marouane Fellaini called into action, though the latter only lasted seven minutes before being replaced by Ander Herrera.
From that point on United looked like a lost cause, with the 'Red Devils' lacking cohesion and cutting edge. Eriksen almost put the icing on the cake for Spurs with 65 minutes played as his dipping effort from range dropped narrowly wide of the far post with De Gea beaten.
The Dane was at the heart of Spurs' best stuff all game and created two more chances shortly after, but Kane could only scuff an effort straight at the goalkeeper, before Son shot straight at De Gea from a tight angle with Kane waiting for a tap-in in the middle.
The hosts cruised to victory form there on out to add further intrigue to the race for the Champions League places.
