Neymar, Lionel Messi tops football most valuable player list as Cristiano Ronaldo drops to 49th (Details, pics)

Ballon d'Or holder Cristiano Ronaldo is only the 49th-most valuable player in Europe's top five leagues with a value of €80.4 million, according to the latest study from CIES' Football Observatory.

Paris Saint-Germain's Neymar tops the rankings with a value of €213 million, Barcelona's Lionel Messi (€202.2 million) is second and Tottenham Hotspur striker Harry Kane is third at €194.7 million.

Per the report, values are calculated using a number of key criteria including "age, position, contract duration, performance [and] international status."

Premier League players take up five of the top 10 places, with Spurs playmaker Dele Alli sixth, Manchester City's Kevin de Bruyne seventh and Manchester United duo Romelu Lukaku and Paul Pogba eight and 10th, respectively.

It is not a markedly different list at the top end of the rankings the Football Observatory produced a year ago.

Seven of the top 10 this year were also in it last year with Neymar and Messi maintaining their spots at one and two, respectively.

Barcelona's Luis Suarez and Chelsea's Eden Hazard are out of the top 10 but remain in the top 20.

Ronaldo's drop from Europe's seventh most valuable to just inside the top 50, though, is notable.

This time last year he was valued at €126.5 million. But the fact he is now 32 and has endured poor league form in 2017-18 is likely to have counted against him for CIES' latest report.

In the second half of 2016-17 the Portuguese superstar was instrumental as Real won La Liga and the UEFA Champions League, hence the Ballon d'Or win.

However, in the new season he has been unspectacular in the Spanish top flight, netting just four goals as Real have slipped 16 points behind leaders Barcelona.

Meanwhile, Ronaldo's Barcelona rival Messi, 30, has netted 16 times and provided seven assists in 18 league appearances as the Blaugrana have gone unbeaten so far in 2017-18, and Neymar has got off to a flying start with PSG following his £200 million summer move from the Camp Nou.
