Cristiano Ronaldo Set For New Deal With Real Madrid To Match Neymar and Messi's annual salary (Details, pics)
Real Madrid are reportedly ready to offer Cristiano Ronaldo fresh contract terms that would see him earn an extra €9 million (£8 million) every year.
According to Spanish publication ABC (h/t AS), Los Blancos want to erase any speculation lingering over the forward's future and give him a new deal with an annual salary of €30 million (£26 million) at the end of the season. As noted by AS, that hike in wages would push Ronaldo closer to the sum earned by Neymar at Paris Saint-Germain; it's reported the Brazilian's yearly earnings work out at around €37 million (£33 million) in the French capital.
Despite being a Madrid icon and the club's all-time record goalscorer, there has been speculation swirling around Ronaldo in recent years. Ahead of the campaign, BBC Sport's Dan Roan reported that Ronaldo wanted a move away from the Santiago Bernabeu. The Portuguese's disappointing season by his own high standards has only added fuel to the rumours that the forward may fancy a fresh challenge elsewhere.
According to Sky Sports' Kaveh Solhekol, the 32-year-old has expressed some interest in a possible move back to Manchester United, with Madrid said to have left promises unfulfilled regarding a new deal:
There are some Madridistas that would be hesitant about giving Ronaldo a new deal based on the terms aforementioned, despite the undoubted esteem he's held in.
This season Madrid have been well short of the levels they've showcased in recent campaigns, and their No. 7's own poor form has been part of that. Ronaldo, who is usually so prolific, has only netted eight La Liga goals this season; nine players in the top flight have a better record.
There have been more positive signs for the forward lately, though, with Madrid stringing together impressive back-to-back league wins, with Ronaldo grabbing braces in each.
Per AS, there have been some sections of the Madrid fan base calling for Ronaldo to move on. However, it would be no surprise if he came to the fore for his team again during the run-in.
The former United man has proved himself to be the player for the big occasion lately, as he was key to Madrid winning the UEFA Champions League and La Liga double last term, and the former prize the season before.
And given what he can offer, there may be some justification for more lucrative terms. As relayed below, Ronaldo's current salary at the Bernabeu doesn't measure up to what Neymar and Barcelona talisman Lionel Messi are earning.
While he's gone through a rough patch recently, Ronaldo remains one of the most potent and decisive footballers in the game. Madrid should be doing what they can to keep him around.
When he signed his previous contract in 2016—a deal that sees Ronaldo tied down until 2021—the Portuguese said he still had a decade left at the highest level, per BBC Sport. If Madrid do boost his salary as part of a new contract, they will certainly be hoping that's the case.
